Our habits shape our consciousness. The way we eat, speak, spend our time, and interact with the world doesn't just reflect who we are—it also influences who we become.
In bhakti-yoga, spiritual growth is not only about what happens during meditation or prayer. It's about creating a lifestyle that supports clarity, compassion, self-awareness, and a deeper connection with God, Krishna.
For this reason, practitioners follow four foundational principles. Rather than seeing them as restrictions, they are understood as tools for freedom—guidelines that help us live with greater purpose and intention.
The four basic principles are as follows:
Compassion
Helping living beings, both materially and spiritually. True followers of the Vedic and related scriptures are strict vegetarians. It is entirely possible to live a healthy and happy life without unnecessarily killing innocent living beings. Killing them instead of protecting them is contrary to the laws of God.
Austerity
Accepting only what we truly need, without greed or violence. Intoxicants such as alcohol, hard and soft drugs, tobacco, caffeine, and similar substances diminish a person's compassion and kindness. Becoming addicted to them is not only unnecessary but also very harmful to our body, mind, and the people around us. The best alternative to using addictive substances is to awaken our eternal relationship with God (Krishna) by living in accordance with His laws.
Purity of Body, Mind, and Soul
This means cleansing the body daily, but also refraining from illicit sexual activity (sexual relations only within marriage and for the purpose of having children). Celibacy, chanting the names of God, and studying sacred scriptures help us keep our mind and soul balanced and pure.
Truthfulness
Not lying or gambling. Gambling undermines truthfulness because it is an attempt to circumvent the laws of nature for material gain without having worked honestly for it. An honest action is the best gamble and guarantees success.
Our scriptures provide many rules and methods that we can follow to lead a healthy, happy, and successful life. However, the most important rule of all is this: always remember Krishna and never forget Him.
